A SMALL contingent of members and friends of Turriff’s Royal British Legion gathered at Forglen Cemetery on Sunday, November 6, to pay tribute to Piper George Findlater VC of the Gordon Highlanders, at this special time of remembrance.
A wreath and poppy crosses were laid, and Pipers Sandy Shearer and Kieran Addison played a “lament” in honour of George afterwards.
Born at the Mill of Turriff on February 16, 1872, George Findlater VC always wanted to be a soldier.
After a couple of years of farm work, he enlisted in the 2nd Battalion of the Gordon Highlanders in Aberdeen.
He was famed for playing the bagpipes after being shot in both ankles at the Battle of Dargai in December 1897.
